Although Krishna and Vishnu are esentially the same Supreme Personality of Godhead, acaryas – or the qualified representatives of Him in the original disciplic succesion advice worshipping Lord Krishna in His original form of Sri Krishna. The spiritual advantage isn't gained by the worship itself independently, but mostly by accepting and following your guru, and thus making Him happy. And when Your spiritual master is satisfied, this brings more joy to Krishna Himself, than worshiping Him directly but in an unauthorised way.
